Volunteering

Every year in about March the Marine Ranger recruits a long term volunteer to help lighten the load over the busy summer months. It’s a fantastic opportunity for someone wanting to gain practical experience working at the forefront of marine conservation and the VMR gets an extra pair of hands too! Tasks the volunteer is required to do vary on a daily basis and include:

  • Assisting in organising and leading educational events such as seashore safaris, school groups, Seasearch courses and the underwater photography competition.
  • Carrying out practical management as necessary such as beach cleans.
  • Carrying out surveys of marine life such as jellyfish, lobster pots, invasive species, shark and ray egg cases, rocky shore life and visiting divers and tourists.
  • Producing a monthly ‘creature feature’ article and other interpretative resources as necessary.
  • Promoting the VMR Code of Conduct by liaising with the local community, divers and other visitors.
  • Writing an end of season report about their time spent at the Reserve.
  • Other duties as necessary to assist with running of the VMR and the St Abb’s Head NNR.
