John Dory seen off Eyemouth
Yesterday saw the first sighting of a John Dory (Zeus faber) in the area, at Nestends Reef off Eyemouth. Not commonly seen in the North Sea, we tend to have just one or two sightings a year.
John Dories are strange looking fish; see them from the side and they are an obvious oval fish with a dark spot in the centre of the body, but when they turn to be side on they virtually disappear as their body is as compressed as a flatfish. They are also called the St Peter's Fish as the dark spot is meant to be the fingerprint of St Peter who was a fisherman.
