Another first for the Reserve!
It just goes to show, its always worth keeping your eyes peeled for something out of the ordinary whenever you spend time at the Marine Reserve. Yesterday, a volunteer taking part in a beach clean happened upon a species of fish that hadn't been recorded in the Reserve before.
Sadly the fish was dead, and not in the best condition but there was enough of it left for the Marine Ranger to know that she didn't know what it was! Luckily, there was a camera on scene, and so photos could be taken from all possible angles and sent off to fish experts around the country. All were in agreement that it was an Atlantic Pomfret or Ray's Bream (Brama brama). This is a migratory species that is sometimes washed up on British beaches over the winter. Not on the beaches of the Marine Reserve though - until now!
