Edible boats a feast for the eyes!

Wednesday 23rd July saw 100s of people, of all ages, descending on Eyemouth beach to take part in Britain's first ever Edible Boat Race. This eco-friendly fun was part of the Eyemouth Herring Queen Festival celebrations.
It was truly heartwarming to see how the local community embraced this rather off-the-wall event with perhaps 40 vessels being hand-crafted for the competition. Although the healthy option of fruit & veg dominated the field, the sweeter tooth was catered for too with quite a few marshmallows being used and one prize being won by a chocolate tart!
There were three parts to the competition: design & construction; seaworthiness and the judges special prize for their favourite boat. There was a panel of three judges, all local experts in the form of maritime artist David Dougal; and Morley Prowse and Stephen Walters from Eyemouth World of Boats.
The competition attracted huge media interest (Google Edible Boat Race and have a look) and was enormous fun and people have already been talking about what their design for next year will be so it looks like it might become an annual event!
