Creel Damage in the Voluntary Marine Reserve!
In the week commencing 19 July there was an incident of creel damage reported in the VMR at St Abbs.
The VMR was established to Conserve the biodiversity of the coastal waters, to raise awareness of the marine environment through education and to promote responsible recreational use along side a sustainable fishery to the mutual benefit of all'
Fisheries within the VMR utilise traditional and sustainable methods and tampering with fishing gear or lobster pots is not only illegal and dangerous, but also jeopardises future relations between divers and the local fishing community.
Whilst the majority of recreational users are respectful of the code of conduct within the reserve there are a few individuals who have not been observing the VMRs Code of Practice. Such behaviour is a major set back to the hard work put in by the VMR over the past 20 years. In particular, please note the following guidelines:
- Fishing and sea angling by traditional methods are permitted but obey fisheries regulations
- DO NOT tamper with fishing gear or lobster pots (this is illegal and dangerous)
- DO NOT collect plants or animals within the reserve
- Maintain an high standard of behaviour and decency in public places
